Robert Francis Prevost, aged 69, has been elected as the 267th pope and will assume the name Leo XIV. He is the first American to ascend to the papacy, although his extensive missionary work in Peru has also led many to regard him as a cardinal of Latin American origin.

Born in Chicago in 1955 to parents of Spanish and Franco-Italian heritage, Prevost began his religious service as an altar boy and was ordained to the priesthood in 1982.

Three years later, he moved to Peru, where he dedicated himself to pastoral and missionary work, while also returning periodically to the United States to serve as both a pastor and prior in his native city.

He holds Peruvian nationality and is warmly remembered for his efforts in supporting marginalized communities and fostering unity. During his time in Peru, he spent a decade serving as a parish priest and seminary instructor in the city of Trujillo, located in the country’s northwest region.

The Roman Catholic Church recognizes a total of 267 legitimate popes, beginning with Saint Peter, who is traditionally considered the first pope, serving from approximately 30 AD until his martyrdom around 64–67 AD.
