Zakat, an Arabic term meaning “charitable giving” or “supporting those in need,” is a fundamental pillar of Islam. It is a compulsory act of worship for Muslims in many countries, serving as both a means of social welfare and spiritual purification. By donating a portion of their wealth, Muslims cleanse their earnings and contribute to the well-being of society.

This obligatory contribution is calculated based on an individual’s income and total assets. Those who meet the criteria are required to donate a minimum of 2.5% (or 1/40) of their accumulated savings and wealth annually.

Eligible Recipients of Zakat

Zakat must be distributed to specific groups of people, as outlined in Islamic teachings. These include:

  • The Poor and Needy – Those struggling to afford basic necessities.
  • New Muslim Converts – Individuals who have embraced Islam and require financial assistance.
  • Enslaved Individuals – Those seeking freedom from servitude.
  • Debtors – People burdened by financial obligations they cannot repay.
  • Defenders of the Muslim Community – Individuals engaged in protecting and safeguarding the Muslim community.
  • Stranded Travelers – Those unable to return home due to financial hardship.
