The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has denied media reports about sending its mission to Pakistan to review various matters, as reported by national media.
According to a report by Geo News citing sources on Sunday, the IMF mission has been sent to Pakistan to assess various matters. The mission began its work on Thursday, February 6, and will continue until February 14.
The report states that the IMF mission is engaged in reviewing judicial appointments and the independence of the judiciary. The mission is also assessing banking regulations and money laundering issues. Additionally, the IMF mission will examine governance-related matters.
According to media report citing sources, the IMF mission will hold meetings with representatives from 19 ministries, departments, and institutions, including the Judicial Commission and the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The mission’s focus is on strengthening the rule of law, anti-corruption measures, and financial oversight.
The planning for this IMF mission was done in September last year. The IMF mission is scheduled to meet with the Judicial Commission next week to discuss the procedure for the appointment of judges. The mission will also conduct meetings at the Supreme Court to assess judicial independence.
The IMF mission will finalize its assessment, and the report will be published by July. Under the $7 billion agreement, Pakistan is obligated to release a comprehensive governance report.
On the other hand, IMF spokesperson Maher Benjaji, speaking to Geo News, stated that no review mission has arrived in Pakistan, and no assessment will be conducted beyond matters related to the program.
