The first batch of 146 electric buses, part of a total order of 160, has arrived in Islamabad, aiming to provide a smoother and more eco-friendly travel experience for the city’s residents.

According to officials from the Capital Development Authority (CDA), the final batch of 14 electric buses has already departed from China and is expected to arrive soon. The construction of a zero-point charging station is also underway. CDA officials mentioned that the station’s construction had been delayed due to the cancellation of tenders twice, but the authority has now issued a new tender at reduced rates. The first phase will focus on setting up charging stations and parking areas for the buses on new routes.

In the initial phase, temporary office spaces will be set up in containers, and bus operations are expected to begin shortly. Officials stated that approximately one month will be required to train drivers for the new routes. The buses will initially operate on routes including Park Road, B-7, PWD, I-8, and I-9, with approvals already granted for these areas.

Additionally, the Punjab government announced plans in early December to introduce 102 electric buses in Rawalpindi, covering an 84-kilometer route along 10 major public transport lines. The provincial government has allocated Rs 200 million for this initiative, with an overall investment of Rs 4.7 billion. This project is expected to greatly enhance air quality by reducing environmental pollution.

Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan confirmed in June that the electric bus service will launch next year, connecting key areas such as Taxila, Wah Cantt, and IJP Road, along with Daulatala and Rawalpindi.
