Muzaffarabad Airport, located in the capital of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), has been closed for the past 23 years, despite being established in 1987 as a crucial airfield for the region. The airport, once operational with two flights, was shut down in 2001 due to a decrease in passenger numbers. Since then, it has remained inactive for regular commercial flights, leaving residents and businesses in the region calling for its restoration.
Muzaffarabad Airport briefly resumed operations in 2005 for relief activities following the devastating earthquake, serving as a key hub for helicopter services delivering much-needed supplies. However, since that period, it has not been used for regular flights. Local citizens have voiced their frustration over the continued closure, urging the government of Pakistan to reopen the airport. They argue that its restoration would significantly boost the tourism sector in AJK, making it easier for both domestic and international tourists to visit. The airport, located just 5 kilometers from the city center and surrounded by picturesque mountainous terrain, could become a vital connection point for the region, offering stunning views of the surrounding valleys.
The airport was originally constructed to enhance connectivity, particularly in emergencies, and to support the administrative needs of the region. However, geographical challenges, including the short runway and rugged topography, have made it difficult for larger commercial aircraft to operate. Despite this, residents believe that reopening the airport could have a transformative effect on the local economy by attracting tourists and improving regional accessibility. Currently, the airport is not used for regular flights but serves as an emergency landing site for occasional VIP or military operations.
