Karachi is once again grappling with a severe water crisis as damaged infrastructure has left many parts of the city parched.
To address public concerns, the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has assured residents that water supplies will soon be restored to all affected areas.
The crisis began when a main pipeline was damaged during construction work on the Red Line project along University Road. Areas impacted by the disruption include Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, PIB Colony, Liaquatabad, Ranchore Line, Old City Area, Saddar, Korangi, Landhi, Shah Faisal Colony, and Malir.
While KWSC had planned to complete repairs by Thursday evening, another leak emerged at Old Sabzi Mandi, causing millions of gallons of water to spill onto the road, wasting valuable resources and disrupting traffic flow.
According to a KWSC spokesperson, “Our team has repaired the damaged pipelines and replaced valves at three sites, with work ongoing at a fourth location.” They also confirmed that two significant ruptures in the main pipeline near University Road have been addressed.
Karachi primarily sources its water from Keenjhar Lake, a man-made reservoir around 150km from the city, which is fed by the remaining flow of the Indus River after its 3,200km journey through Pakistan.
