The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has made another U-turn by first deciding to participate in the special parliamentary committee to appoint the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) and later announcing a boycott, media reported on Tuesday.
According to the report, despite initially nominating Barrister Ali Zafar, Barrister Gohar, and Sahibzada Hamid Raza to the committee, the PTI has now decided to stay away from the proceedings.
The report stated that following the notification confirming PTI’s nominees for the special parliamentary committee on the appointment of the Chief Justice, PTI’s political committee held an emergency meeting and announced a complete boycott of the committee’s proceedings.
In its official statement issued after the political committee meeting, PTI decided to take strict action against party members who voted against the party’s policy during the voting on the 26th constitutional amendment.
As per the party statement, this includes revoking their basic party membership and taking disciplinary measures.
PTI also approved the issuance of show-cause notices to its parliamentarians who broke ties with the party and established relations with the government circles.
As per the PTI statement, these parliamentarians will be asked to clarify their position on the violation of party directives.
PTI has also decided to launch an inquiry to determine why certain party members were out of contact before the voting on the 26th constitutional amendment. The committee will submit its findings to the PTI founder and former prime minister, Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated at Adiala Jail.
