Islamabad: The internal proceedings of a special parliamentary committee meeting regarding the establishment of constitutional courts have surfaced.
Both the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have stepped back from supporting the creation of constitutional courts.
According to a report by Express News, the meeting was chaired by Khursheed Shah, and discussions focused on the draft of the 26th Constitutional Amendment.
It was agreed between the government’s coalition partners and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) to set aside the provisions concerning the formation of constitutional courts.
The coalition parties and JUI-F also reached a consensus on the formation of a constitutional bench. The government and JUI-F further decided to consult with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on the joint draft, assigning Maulana Fazlur Rehman the task of sharing the finalized version with PTI leadership. The draft is in its final stages of preparation.
At the end of the meeting, the committee chairman announced that the members of the special committee would reconvene after Friday prayers.
The coalition parties stressed the importance of consensus on the constitutional amendment. PPP and JUI-F have agreed on the draft, though PPP leader Sherry Rehman mentioned that PTI has yet to receive the draft for review.
