Freedom Struggle and Aga Khan III

Ambassador Dr. Jamil by Ambassador Dr. Jamil

Reading Time: 3 mins read

Every year, as the sun rises on August 14, it brings with it a deep sense of longing, excitement, and a flood of cherished memories of our forefathers. Their sacrifices and efforts have bestowed upon us, the people of Pakistan, a priceless gift: the rebirth of a nation.

The true value of freedom is best understood by those who have been deprived of it, who have no homeland of their own. Stateless and separated from their homeland, these individuals are filled with sorrow, and whenever they meet, they speak of their woes and the profound grief they feel from being denied the blessing of freedom.

Pakistan is a divine gift, recognized for its significance among the nations of the world and within the Islamic community. Every nation faces challenges and tests throughout its history, and Pakistan is no exception. While the nation may currently face economic, social, and political challenges, resilient and free nations rise above these difficulties, striving for progress and prosperity with determination.

Even the Muslim families who remained in India after the partition continue to yearn for the sense of freedom they believe should exist in a truly free country—freedom of religion, personal freedom—which they feel they are unable to fully enjoy, even 77 years later.

The visionary leadership of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah took root in 1916 when he joined the Muslim League. Recognizing the challenges Muslims faced within the Congress, Jinnah sought counsel from insightful personalities, including the prominent Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan III. Aga Khan III, a founding member of the Muslim League, held key positions and played a crucial role in uniting Muslim leaders and intellectuals under a common cause. He provided significant financial support to the Muslim League, ensuring its survival during its early, challenging days. It is not an exaggeration to say that without the support and vision of leaders like Aga Khan III, the history of Muslims in India and Pakistan might have been very different.

After the establishment of Pakistan in 1947, Aga Khan III continued to play a pivotal role, facilitating the migration and resettlement of Muslims in the newly-formed nation. His passing on July 11, 1957, in Versoix, Switzerland, marked the end of an era, but his efforts left a lasting impact on the lives of Muslims in Pakistan.

Aga Khan III’s visionary ideas have inspired many countries around the world to serve humanity in various fields, including education, culture, and healthcare—initiatives that began in Pakistan, the place of his birth. He was born in Karachi, and his family has always held a deep affection and connection to Pakistan.

It is important to express gratitude to the Aga Khan family, which has gifted Pakistan with institutions like the Aga Khan University, a globally recognized leader in education and healthcare. In recognition of his tireless efforts in advancing the mission of the Aga Khan, the Government of Pakistan awarded the President of Aga Khan University, Dr. Sulaiman Shahabuddin, Sitara-e-Imtiaz, the highest civilian honor. Under the leadership of Dr. Shahabuddin and His Highness the Aga Khan, the light that the Aga Khan family kindled continues to shine ever brighter, illuminating the path forward for future generations.

Today, His Highness the Aga Khan has carried forward the legacy of his grandfather, Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan, by infusing new energy into his vision of humanism. In the modern era, he has expanded upon his grandfather’s mission, focusing on the promotion of education, health, and socio-economic development in alignment with these ideals.

The prestigious award given to Dr. Sulaiman Shahabuddin by the government of Pakistan is a clear indication of the nation’s appreciation for the remarkable contributions of Aga Khan University under his leadership.

As we reflect on these accomplishments, let us commit ourselves to working tirelessly across education, health, science, and all other sectors, so that Pakistan continues to progress toward its development goals, growing stronger and more prosperous with each passing day.
