Wasim Akram has declined the offer to become the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi had hoped Akram would join the board to contribute to cricket-related matters, but the former cricketer’s existing commitments prevented him from accepting the role.
According to Cricket Pakistan, Naqvi, who also serves as the Federal Minister of Interior, had faced criticism for not dedicating enough time to PCB affairs. The CEO position entails overseeing cricket operations within Pakistan.
Akram cited his prior engagements and frequent travels to Australia for personal reasons as reasons for declining the offer. Additionally, the position required relocating to Lahore, whereas Akram resides in Karachi, making it unfeasible for him.
Despite turning down the CEO position, Akram expressed his willingness to support Pakistan cricket without financial compensation. He reportedly appreciated the PCB chairman’s plans and vision.
The PCB subsequently offered the position to Waqar Younis, who accepted and is set to begin his tenure on August 1.
A source informed Cricbuzz, “The PCB wanted someone with cricketing knowledge capable of making decisions. Waqar Younis was signed,” adding that Waqar will also undertake additional responsibilities as assigned by the PCB chairman.
