RAWALPINDI: Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former Prime Minister, along with his wife Bushra Bibi, have been remanded into the custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for eight days.
This development comes after an accountability court approved NAB’s request to detain them in connection with alleged misuse of power to acquire gifts from the Toshakhana.
The decision follows their recent acquittal in a case concerning an alleged illegal marriage, where they were previously sentenced to seven years in prison. Despite this legal victory, their hopes for immediate release were dashed as NAB promptly arrested them on new charges.
Deputy Director Mohsin Haroon led the NAB team in arresting Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi from Adiala Jail, where they were awaiting further legal proceedings. PTI, which had anticipated Khan’s potential release following recent legal victories, including a Supreme Court ruling confirming the party’s eligibility for reserved seats, now faces uncertainty.
Khan’s lawyer, Zaheer Abbas Chaudhary, objected to the remand, citing ongoing legal engagements and a pending bail application in the Supreme Court. Chaudhary condemned the arrests as unlawful, emphasizing that Khan has been embroiled in legal battles since August last year, facing convictions in various cases, including those related to Toshakhana and charges of leaking classified information.
