Jamshed Dasti, the leader of Pakistan Tehreek-I-Insaf, has leveled grave accusations against the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) and intelligence agencies, alleging that they subjected his family to brutal treatment.
In a video shared on his social media account on Monday morning, Dasti can be seen in a distressed state, accusing officials of forcibly stripping his wife naked and assaulting his children.
Dasti, a four-time Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from South Punjab, claims that his family was held captive for hours, enduring physical abuse at the hands of the authorities. In the video message, he asserts that the maltreatment is a result of his belonging to the economically disadvantaged class, lacking influence or power. According to Dasti, the officials confiscated CCTV footage and mobile phones during the incident.
Currently in hiding and evading multiple arrest attempts related to cases from May 9, 2023, Dasti had previously refused to leave Pakistan Tehreek-I-Insaf (PTI) and had pledged his support for Imran Khan. Last week, his wife Nazia Dasti was permitted to file his nomination papers from NA-175 and NA-176, with the Lahore High Court’s Multan bench instructing the Election Commission of Pakistan not to harass her during the process. Dasti had earlier obtained protective bail from the Lahore High Court.
Expressing gratitude for the court’s decision in an online video statement, Dasti assured his followers that he would rejoin them shortly. Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan, a senior politician, deemed the situation a serious matter and called for an official inquiry by the Supreme Court of Pakistan. In a tweet, he stated, “This is a very serious situation, an impartial inquiry should be made by the Supreme Court of Pakistan. I will raise this issue in the Senate, God willing.”
Meanwhile, political commentator Orya Maqbool Jan and media personality Maleeha Hashmi have both expressed shock at the incident.
