The Bikeriders, the upcoming film featuring Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy, has secured a new release date following a change in distributor. According to Variety, the movie is now set to hit cinemas across the US on June 21, 2024. However, a new release date for the UK is still pending confirmation.
This development follows the recent acquisition of the film by Focus Features, after the original studio, New Regency, in partnership with 20th Century Studios and Disney, decided to remove it from the release schedule. Originally slated for a December release, The Bikeriders faced delays due to the resolved SAG-AFTRA actors’ union strike. Concerns about the cast’s ability to adequately promote the movie led to an indefinite postponement of its premiere.
The production company had initially aimed for the film to qualify for the 2024 awards season, but with the new release date, it will now be eligible for the 2025 awards season.
Starring Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, and Tom Hardy, The Bikeriders draws inspiration from Danny Lyon’s 1968 photobook of the same name. The film narrates the story of The Vandals, a Midwestern motorcycle club that transforms from a rebellious outlaw group to a sinister gang.
Jodie Comer takes on the role of Kathy, the wife of group member Benny (played by Butler) and the film’s narrator. She recounts the group’s rise and fall to journalist Danny Lyon, portrayed by Mike Faist. Tom Hardy plays the role of Johnny, the founder of the gang.
Directed by Jeff Nichols, the film also features Norman Reedus from The Walking Dead, Mike Shannon from Bullet Train, and Boyd Holbrook from Narcos. Additional cast members include Paul Sparks, Emory Cohen, Damon Herriman, Beau Knapp, and Karl Glusman.
Having premiered at the Telluride Film Festival earlier this year to positive reviews, The Bikeriders currently holds an 85% rating on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 34 reviews.
