The issue of missing persons specially Balochs is not new in Pakistan but the recent written order from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) concerning the disappearance of Baloch students has once again brought to light a distressing reality that requires immediate attention.
The court’s statement about the 69 Baloch students encountering racial profiling and forced disappearance highlights serious concerns regarding human rights violations. This significant revelation underscores a grave issue, especially considering that 50 students are still missing, despite numerous hearings and the establishment of a commission. It is deeply troubling that, despite these efforts, the fate of these students remains uncertain, raising questions about the government’s effectiveness in resolving such critical matters.
The court’s criticism of the prime minister and interior minister’s lack of substantial action after 21 hearings reflects a disturbing trend. This lack of tangible progress not only hampers the judicial process but also diminishes citizens’ confidence in the authorities. In cases like these, where the judiciary is often the last hope for the oppressed, the court rightly emphasizes the urgent need for decisive action to address this alarming situation.
The bench’s observation that the federal government has treated this matter non-seriously raises significant questions about its commitment to safeguarding citizens’ rights. Despite the government’s paramount responsibility to protect citizens from human rights violations, the court’s findings present a bleak picture of this commitment. The decision to summon the prime minister, ministers, and secretaries illustrates the court’s determination to hold those in power accountable, emphasizing the urgency for transparent and proactive measures to address these pressing concerns.
It i really sad that the despite caretaker PM and caretaker Interior Minister belonging to Balochistan, the issue is not being given due importance, which is creating sense of insecurity in the society.
