What Went Wrong in Asia Cup 2023?

As all Pakistanis know their cricket team is number one in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Ranking and before the start of Asia Cup 2023, not only Pakistan’s fans but also other countries’ fans assumed Pakistan cricket team favorite for winning the Asia Cup but why did it not qualify for final? Here are some reasons:

1. Weak Bowling and Fielding: Bowling and fielding are crucial aspects of the game. Team Pakistan struggles to take wickets, control the run rate, or drop crucial catches in the last two games against Sri Lanka and India.
2. Poor Batting Performance: As we know in cricket, scoring runs is essential, Pakistan while chasing 356 runs against India only scored 128 runs which shows their poor batting performance, although team Pakistan gave a good target to Sir Lanka I guess that was not enough for winning the game.
3. Injuries to Key Players: After Injuries to Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah, and fever to Imam ul Haq in the last game against Sri Lanka which was considered to be semi-final to both teams gave a setback to team Pakistan Losing these star players can disrupt team balance and strategy.
4. Captaincy: I feel the captaincy of Babar Azam is fine and as a fan, we need to understand that every player tries to put in their 100% but sometimes they make a mistake unintentionally so we give them a margin for this. The same can be applied to Babar’s captaincy.
5. Pressure and Nervousness: The pressure of a big tournament can affect players’ performance. We saw the past two years Pakistan cricket team take too much pressure, particularly in high-stakes matches, like the last T20 World Cup and last Asia Cup we lost the finals because of mistakes and poor decision-making.
6. External Factors: In this Asia Cup weather conditions and pitch are in favor of the Pakistan cricket team, and unfamiliar playing conditions impact a team’s Pakistan performance.
7. Opponent’s Strength: India is a strong and well-prepared opponent after losing against India, team Pakistan was under pressure and we can see this pressure against Sri Lanka’s do-and-die match.
8. Inadequate Adaptation: The Pakistan team was far behind in adapting to changing match situations and their failure to adjust to different game situations or opposition tactics would lead to losses.

As the Pakistan cricket team is out of the Asia Cup race now, we (Pakistan’s cricket team fans) hope that the Pakistan men’s cricket team will perform well in next month’s ICC ODI cricket world Cup in India and will give a gift to fans to celebrates world cup victory.
