SAHIWAL: A prisoner convicted for an assassination attempt on former president General Pervez Musharraf died under custody in Sahiwal Jail.
Sahiwal District Sessions Judge ordered a judicial inquiry into the death of prisoner Karam Din and appointed the Judicial Magistrate as Inquiry Officer to probe his death in jail.
Karam Din, aged 50, was sentenced to life imprisonment by an Anti-Terrorism Court. He had been serving his term in jail for the last 18 years and was kept in a high-security zone.
On Friday, Karam Din suddenly fell unconscious in the prison. He was brought to the Teaching Hospital where he passed away.
After the post-mortem, police handed over the body to the heirs who took it to Sadiqabad. Officials say that the cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem report is issued.
Earlier this year in March, a jail warden was killed after unidentified persons opened fire near Pul Barsan area of Sahiwal.
Yasin, the warden of Central Jail Sahiwal, was on his way home when three motorcycle riders signaled him to stop and upon not stopping they shot him from behind, hitting him in the head.
After the firing incident, the suspects fled from the spot while the police reached the spot and started investigation. Police said that they were investigating whether the incident occurred as a result of firing on robbery resistance or was murdered due to enmity.
