Rifts in PTI or rumours?

Shahid Shahnawaz by Shahid Shahnawaz

It was 2018 when Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) got momentum as numerous individuals became members of the National and Provincial Assemblies after being voted on the name of Imran Khan, who later, became prime minister of the country.

With each year in power, various federal ministers, special advisors, and advisers to the Prime Minister were appointed. Someone was given the role of the President, someone took a seat in the Senate.

Then, according to Imran Khan, he was ousted from power, and following the claims of his opponents, he was removed through a motion of no confidence under the democratic process, which was the first of its kind in the country’s history. Many Prime Ministers and governments had been removed in the country, but in ‘illegal’ manner.

However, after the motion of no confidence against Imran Khan, his Premiership was taken away. The Deputy Speaker rejected the motion of no confidence, and the President of the country, Dr. Arif Alvi, dissolved the National Assembly on Imran Khan’s advice.

But then the Supreme Court intervened, and the National Assembly was suddenly restored. The motion of no confidence was successful, and Imran Khan was removed from the Premiership. Without a doubt, all these events were entirely new to the country’s history.

After that, what happened was also noteworthy. Shahbaz Sharif became the Prime Minister, and his son Hamza Shahbaz became the Chief Minister of Punjab, only to be removed afterward. Then, during Shahbaz Sharif’s government, the crisis of the pandemic began.

Imran Khan’s residence, Zaman Park, was the place from where he was arrested by police after a local court in Islamabad handed over three years of imprisonment and disqualified the PTI chief in the Toshakhana case.

During this time, the news emerged that after Imran Khan’s arrest, factions have arisen within the party. Some media channels claimed based on sources that two groups within PTI had come face to face during a party’s core committee meeting.

There was also an exchange of harsh statements between these two groups. Leaders accused each other of being disloyal and one member stated that if Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz permit, he can point out the traitor.

Media reports also suggested that Omar Ayub is in contact with the member who was declared a traitor and a tug of war has begun between Ayub and Shah Mahmood Qureshi to become Imran Khan’s successor, but Ayub has denied all these claims.

A few days ago, Omar Ayub Khan stated that he respects Shah Mahmood Qureshi immensely. No disputes occurred during the PTI core committee meeting. Let the opponents prepare for the elections; we will defeat them in the general elections.

The question here is whether PTI is indeed divided or whether PTI still considers itself in a position to defeat its opponents, among whom its chosen electables are also included, who are now part of PTI Parliamentarians or have become part of the establishment of the Istekham-e-Pakistan Party?
