ISLAMABAD: The government has appointed Malik Amjad Zubair Tiwana as the new chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
Tiwana is currently posted as a member operation of the Inland Revenue Service (IRS). He has been appointed as new chairman of FBR by the federal cabinet through a circulation summary.
The current FBR chairman Mr Asim Ahmad retired on July 30 after reaching superannuation. He was appointed by the present government on April 27.
Ahmed had also served as the FBR chairman in 2021 for a few months ahead of Javed Ghani’s retirement but was replaced after a data-hacking incident occurred in the FBR.
Many officers from IRS, Customs and Pakistan Administration Services were under consideration for the slot but Finance Minister Ishaq Dar approved the summary of Tiwana for the top FBR post.
According to reports, there were at least twenty officers who are senior to Tiwana. It was reported that Tiwana held a meeting with the prime minister and was appointed to the post.
Tiwana has also worked as Staff Officer to former FBR chairman Tariq Pasha. The government posted Tiwana as Member IR operations FBR slot in August last year.
The new head of the tax collection authority faces a daunting task as the country has set a target of Rs9.415 trillion for the current fiscal year as committed to the International Monetary Fund.
This shows an increase of Rs2.219 trillion or 30 percent as compared to the revised collection of Rs7.2 trillion in the previous fiscal year.
