ISLAMABAD: Former SSP Malir Rao Anwar, acquitted by Anti-Terrorism Court in Karachi from murder case of Naqeebullah Mehsud and others, has approached Supreme Court of Pakistan to get removed his name from Exit Control List.

A three judges bench head by Justice Ijazul Ahsan heard the case in which Anwar’s lawyer argued that the case, on the basis of which his name was put on ECL, had been quashed and therefore there was no reason to maintain the ban.
After hearing the arguments, the Supreme Court issued notices to the Interior Ministry and adjourned the hearing indefinitely.

Rao Anwar, it may be recalled here, was booked in 2019 for extra-judicial killing of Naqeebullah Mehsud and others in 2018, which triggered the birth of Pashtun Tehffuz Movement (PTM) and a widespread resentment across the former FATA region.
However, after years of trial, an anti-terrorism court on January 23 this year acquitted for the former SSP Malir Rao Anwar in the case pertaining to the killing of 27-year-old Naqeebullah Mehsud, declaring that “evidence in the case was inadequate and “prosecution was unable to prove the accusations against the accused”.
On February 20, Sher Alam, brother of Naqeebullah, has challenged in Sindh High Court (SHC), the acquittal of former senior superintendent of police (SSP) Rao Anwar and other accused in the murder case of his brother. He requested the SHC that the ruling of the ATC, given on January 23, 2023, should be declared null and void.
