Karachiites were eagerly waiting for local government elections since a long time as the port city has many municipals problems including water shortage, broken roads, lack of public transport facilities etc. And only an elected city government can address all these issues of the metropolitans in a better way.
God thank, the local bodies elections have been completed peacefully and process of forming the city government has begun. As expected, no party has got simple majority in the polls. So, no party is in the position to elect its mayor without the help of any other party.
Pakistan People Party (PPP) has emerged as the biggest party with more than 90 seats, but still, it is not able to elect its mayor alone. Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) is on the second position with more than 85 seats, while Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) stands on third position with 40 seats of Union Committee Chairman.
For making city government any two parties of these three will have to joined hands. So far, due to political differences, no party has announced to support other party for mayorship, so still it is not clear what will be the shape of new city government.
Being the biggest Party, in term of seats, PPP has right to make its mayor, but for this it needs support of JI or PTI. On the other side JI and PTI can also make city government jointly, but according to political analysts, in this situation the PPP, which is the ruling party in Sindh, will not cooperate with city government and as a result this government will not be able to solve problems of the port city.
The ideal solution of the issue is power sharing formula in PPP and JI. First one party should be given the post of mayorship for half tenure, i.e., two and a half year, and later the post should be given to the other party for rest of the tenure.
Karachiites cannot wait anymore for solving their issues. The political parties should keep this point in their minds and should process to a political reconciliation for the sake of Karachi and its citizens.
