Pakistan, without a doubt, is blessed with numerous natural resources. Priceless gems are hidden in the mountains, while rivers make our land extremely fertile. We could export countless minerals to other countries.
However, our nation’s greatest resource is its people, who possess a wide range of skills and can pursue education to become engineers, physicians, and architects and excel in a variety of professions.
Yesterday, the news came out that Pakistan’s brain drain situation has aggravated this year, as more than 750,000 educated youth chose to seek employment overseas mainly because of the uncertain economic and political situation amid a shrinking jobs opportunities in the country.
765,000 people left Pakistan for abroad in 2022, nearly triple the 225,000 departures in 2021 and 288,000 emigrants in 2020. This year’s data also included 92,000 highly educated people such as doctors, engineers, information technology experts and accountants.
According to the data, those who left the country in 2022, included more than 92,000 graduates, 350,000 trained workers and the same number of untrained laborers went abroad. The documents also showed that 736,000 people went to the Gulf States.
According to the Bureau of Emigration, an overwhelming majority of the emigrants went to the Middle Eastern countries, mainly Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Among the European destinations, the preferred choice of the Pakistanis appeared to be Romania.
The industrialized nations have long taken advantage of the third world’s deplorable economic conditions to entice its workforce to relocate to the West. Western countries value skills above money, something our politicians never even consider let alone appreciating it.
Western nations have long taken advantage of developing countries, compelling their educated youth to flee their home countries in quest of a better future.
To resolve the political and economic crises, Pakistan’s leaders must band together and devise a workable plan that would open the door to addressing the economic issues that are the root cause of brain drain.
