The former prime minister and PTI chairman who had been criticizing the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), especially after his disqualification in the Toshkhana case is now being given another reason to lash out at the electoral body as it has initiated steps to remove Imran Khan from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairmanship.
Sources said the ECP took action against the PTI chief Imran Khan party chairmanship after his disqualification in the Toshakhana case.
He is the country’s third premier who has been disqualified as a lawmaker, following three-time premier Nawaz Sharif and Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani.
The ECP has scheduled the hearing to remove the former prime minister Imran Khan from PTI chairmanship on December 13. Imran Khan had been criticizing the ECP and its chief and alleging it to be acting as B team of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
Following the judgment of the ECP in the Toshakhana case, Imran Khan has challenged his disqualification but now the ECP has started proceedings to remove Imran Khan as party chairman on the basis of the electoral body’s verdict.
The ECP disqualified the former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman in the Toshakhana reference under Article 63(1)(p).
The ECP said that Khan submitted a false affidavit and was found involved in corrupt practices and ordered to register criminal cases against the PTI chairman.
Latest surveys and by-elections suggest that a large number of Pakistanis still see him as a savior of the common man in the roles of a cricketer, philanthropist, and politician.
Now, when the decision of the Election Commission of Pakistan has been challenged in the courts, how the proceedings to remove Imran Khan as PTI chief can be initiated? How will Khan Sahab and the PTI leadership respond to this development and what will be their future course of action only time will clear the situation? But one thing is for sure the situation will once again become tense.
