Government is fighting the case of Pakistan’s flood victims on international forums including the United Nations and billions of dollars of relief is being demanded.
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has said in a statement that Pakistan should be given relief in the payment of international debt. International organizations and countries should give relief to Pakistan in debt repayment.
The United Nations said that international debt payments should be suspended for flood-affected Pakistan as a big humanitarian crisis is emerging in the country due to devastating by flood. The economy suffered so Pakistan should also request to reschedule the loan.
Undoubtedly, the flood caused massive damage in Pakistan, 3.5 million people were displaced, about 1600 people died and more than 13 thousand were injured. Crops standing on millions of acres were destroyed and millions of people were forced to live under the open sky.
This is a huge calamity that Pakistan is facing and it is the need and compulsion of Pakistan to get debt relief and seek assistance from international organizations.
Pakistan’s economy is already in dire straits and has been trying to survive for a long time by artificial respiration in oxygen tents. The debt-ridden country’s economy is not strong enough to bear the burden of the flood disaster and to face the mountain of rehabilitation of millions of flood-affected families alone.
The world believes that Pakistan’s damage due to such large-scale floods is actually a result of climate change and global warming. At the same time, the world also recognizes that Pakistan is not so much a part of this climate change as it is a victim of it. In such a situation, it is the duty of all these industrialized and developed countries to support Pakistan in getting out of this difficulty.
Until now, the aid announcements by the UN, other international aid organizations and various countries in the world have been quite encouraging, but it is necessary that these announcements are not limited to verbal pledges only, instead the world must materialize its promises and announcements about providing aid to Pakistan for flood affectees.
