Floods’ disaster and government’s poor response

Karachi, the biggest city of the country, is suffering from worst urban flooding after the rains, while more than 40 villages in Ghotki have inundated due to a breach in the embankment of  the River Indus.

Due to climate change, this year Pakistan is facing the worst flooding in its 75-year history. More than 200 people have died in Balochistan so far due to floods and other rain related accidents.

Recent destruction of floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab or any other part of the country is a big question mark on the performance of incumbent government.

When the current government assumed power, Asif Ali Zardari, the main ally of the government, said that they had come into power to provide relief to the public, but still there is no significant relief for the people by the government.

Besides the worst situation created by floods across the country, Pakistan is also face worsening economic situation, a common man neither has proper medical relief or educational facilities. In this situation its sees that destruction is becoming the destiny of this nation, while the government is not capable to cope with the situation.

The measures taken by the federal and provincial governments to help the people affected by rains and floods are akin to a drop in the ocean. Asif Ali Zardari, one of the richest persons in Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, the three-time prime minister of the country, the incumbent Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and other big names of the coalition government seem unable to help the people.

During the period of Imran Khan, Pakistan avoided to become a party in the war between Russia and Ukraine and adopted a neutral foreign policy, which is being completely ignored in the present era. The result is that during the floods, aid of 100,000 and sometimes 1000,000 dollars is coming only from the United States, while the rest of the world has ignored Pakistan.

Allah knows best what is the reason, why international community not helping flood hit Pakistan this time? Does it have no trust on Shehbaz’s government or Russia-Ukraine war has diverted its attention from Pakistan?

In such a situation, the federal government  Should take practical steps to help the helpless flood victims instead of lamenting over the economic situation of the country. There is a well-known saying that the voice of the people is the voice of God. If adequate measures are not taken for flood affected people relief, the people will be compelled to take to the streets against the rulers and for defending their rights.
