LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Khawaja Salman Rafique has surrendered before police after his guards allegedly assaulted an army officer.
The former provincial minister along with close aide Hafiz Noman, reached the Garden Town police station and surrendered to police after they were nominated in the case for torturing the army official. They were subsequently taken into custody.
The complainant, Major Harris, stated that he was tortured over Salman Rafique and Noman’s directives, who are sitting in another vehicle. He added that their personal guards could not torture him without the support of their leaders.
Earlier in the day, the personal guards of Khawaja Salman Rafique and Hafiz Noman were arrested for torturing a Pakistan Army officer in Lahore. The guards, who had tortured a Pakistan Army officer near Kalma Chowk, were arrested by police.
Rafique and Noman have tendered an apology to the army officers regarding the violent incident. “Haris is a respectable person for us and we condemn yesterday’s incident. We have preferred to contact the police. Police told us to hand over the vehicle and security guards. We have followed the police instructions like a responsible citizen,” he said.
Hafiz Noman said that they are not defending yesterday’s incident and the staff should have called the police to the scene. He expressed solidarity with the army officer who had been subjected to torture by their employees and said that they have presented themselves for legal action.
A video shared shared on social media shows a group of men can be seen damaging a black-colored car by blocking traffic on the road. At one point, they can be seen attacking the man, later identified as Major Haris, after opening his car’s door.
Social media users claimed that the assailants were the security guards of Salman Rafique and brawled erupted between them over overtaking issue. The victim was reportedly shifted to CMH Lahore for treatment.
