Political turmoil over the no-confidence motion is on the rise across the country. In this regard, the prime minister is visiting Karachi today while Opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif also met the Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami today to seek a no-confidence vote.

The United Opposition has filed a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan in the National Assembly Secretariat, meanwhile, PPP leader Naveed Qamar said that the relocation was submitted to convene a meeting of the National Assembly that recusal has been submitted with the signature of more than 100 members of National Assembly.

No-confidence motion

At present, the opposition needs 172 votes for the success of the no-confidence motion in the National Assembly. The Speaker of the National Assembly must take action on the no-confidence motion within 7 days. Around 155 members, 7 members of MQM, 5 members of BAP, 5 members of PML-Q, 3 members of GDA, and one member of Awami Muslim League. On the other hand, the total number of members of the opposition is 162. They include 84 members of PML-N, 57 members of the Pakistan Peoples Party, 15 members of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, 4 members of the Balochistan National Party, and one member of Awami National Party. In addition, two independent members are part of the coalition.

Opposition claims

The United Opposition has claimed that the numbers for the no-confidence motion in the National Assembly have been completed, the opposition parties have 161 members in the National Assembly and the opposition has claimed the support of 28 PTI and one coalition party. Opposition claims that there are 16 government members with PML-N, 4 with PPP and 2 with JUI. Six more members of PTI are in touch with PML-N in the National Assembly. Has claimed the support of 197 to 202 members of the National Assembly. According to sources, the names of 28 members of PTI are known to the prime minister.

Imran Khan’s confidence

A consultative meeting of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan decided that the no-confidence motion of the opposition would be thwarted. Reacting to the no-confidence motion filed by the opposition in the National Assembly Secretariat, PM Imran Khan said that this is the last incident of the opposition and nothing will happen till 2028.

PM Imran Khan said that the government is not going anywhere, it will come back stronger, the army is standing with Pakistan, November is far away, when the time comes, we will decide. PM Imran Khan in a meeting with pro-government YouTubers said that the government is not going anywhere, it will get stronger, I am happy that this will be their last incident, we will defeat them in such a way that they will not be able to rise till 2028, he maintained.

No-confidence motions in past

If the opposition gets 172 votes in the National Assembly in favour of the no-confidence motion against PM Imran Khan, then the prime minister will have to leave the PM’s house. Earlier, the motions against Benazir Bhutto and Shaukat Aziz have failed.

When will the voting take place?

According to the constitution, the National Assembly can convene anywhere other than the Parliament building. It is not necessary for the National Assembly to meet in the Parliament building for a vote of no-confidence. After a no-confidence motion is filed, the prime minister has no right to dissolve the assembly.

According to the rules of the National Assembly, the Speaker is bound to convene a meeting within 14 days on the relocation of the opposition, and under the relocation of the opposition, the limit for convening a meeting is 14 days ie 22nd March and voting must take place between 3 and 7 days after the no-confidence motion is tabled.

The motion against the prime minister is open ballot while a secret ballot is held against the Speaker of the Assembly or the Chairman of the Senate.

Who will run the government?

According to experts, if the no-confidence motion is successful, the President of Pakistan may instruct the former prime minister to act temporarily on the election of the Chief Executive. However, the government will end, but the assembly will remain in place and a new prime minister will be elected in the house, while the opposition may have nominated Shehbaz Sharif as a prime ministerial candidate. It remains to be seen whether the elected Prime Minister of Pakistan will be sent home in a constitutional manner or whether Imran Khan will emerge stronger by defeating the opposition.
