It is the hallmark of a democratic society how it treats dissent and difference of opinion while also upholding the freedom of expression. The PTI government is gradually getting a reputation for its disdain and mistreatment of journalists critical of its policies.
The saga witnessed in the arrest and detention of media personality Mohsin Baig is a vivid example. The FIA raided his home after receiving a complaint for making disparaging comments against federal minister Murad Saeed during a TV show. The channel has been taken off-air and the journalist has been remanded in custody. A few days ago, a social media activist was arrested in Lahore for running offensive trends against the prime minister.
A large section of the media is facing threats as the government seems to show intolerance towards critical journalism and political actors routinely attack media outlets and reporters. There have been cases of stifling press freedom, physical attacks and torturing journalists fulfilling their responsibilities. Media regulators have instead adopted tactics to limit independent news coverage from reaching audiences.
Governments have duty to prohibit hate speech but many continue to abuse authority to silence dissent by either passing laws crminalising freedom of expression or directly targeting media practitioners. How governments tolerate unfavourable views or critical voices is a good indication of how they treat human rights. Freedom of speech also includes ideas considered offensive. Government can restrict speech when it violates rights of others, spreads hate or violence but using laws to stifle dissent is unacceptable.
Pakistan continues to be ranked as one of the most dangerous countries for journalists and is bottom ranked in freedom of media indexes. A person imprisoned solely for exercising their right to free speech in a peaceful way is a prisoner of conscience and should be released. On the other hand, journalists should adhere to high standards of media professionalism and ethics. The media has the foremost responsibility to seek the truth rather than spreading rumours and accusations.
Unfortunately, the media environment in Pakistan has been increasingly constricted. The government should accept criticism in politics and ensure provision of democratic rights rather taking using laws and might of the state to suppress peaceful dissent.
