ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has sought a report from Inspector-General Islamabad for allegedly torturing senior journalist Mohsin Baig during detention.

During the hearing on pleas seeking dismissal of cases against the journalist, IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah remarked that no one except the accused can file a petition for case dismissal.

Sardar Latif Khosa, counsel for the petitioner, said that it was unfortunate that even the prime minister got involved in this matter. He said action has been decided against the lower judge of the court who declared the arrest as illegal.

Chief Justice Athar Minallah remarked that the case cannot be dismissed at the request of a third party. “You have filed an application for dismissal of FIR, no one other than the accused can file an application for dismissal of the case, you can amend your application and bring it,” the judge said.

The counsel for the petitioner said his client was not being paid till he met him. He said Mohsin Baig was severely tortured in the police station. “When the court issued bail, he was not allowed to enter the police station. He was beaten by ten to fifteen people in the SHO’s room,” he argued.

The Chief Justice directed the IG Islamabad Police to submit a report on the torture of Mohsin Baig during detention by Monday. The case hearing has been adjourned till Feb 21.

Media personality Mohsin Baig’s wife challenged the terrorism case against him in the Islamabad High Court (IHC), stating that the police had registered a false and baseless case and the court should order the police to dismiss the case.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had arrested Baig after a large contingent of police raided his house in the morning for disparaging remarks against Communications Minister Murad Saeed on a TV programme.

During the raid, the FIA officials said, Baig, his sons and domestic workers opened fire on the FIA team, held two officers hostage and tortured them. The agency said Baig committed a crime by firing on government officials.

The officials added that Baig was taken to Margalla police station where the Islamabad police were taking further action. Baig’s son was also named in the case registered against him at the Margalla police station.
