When humanity is reduced to the point where people start starving to death, its effects are not limited to one country. The effects of the food crisis in Afghanistan have begun to spill over to neighboring countries, including Pakistan.
Human lives are at stake in Afghanistan and Pakistan has been warning the world about the situation since the formation of the Afghan Taliban government. Islamabad had already warned the international community that abandoning Afghanistan could lead to a humanitarian crisis in country and Pakistan’s fears are being substantiated.
Hunger and misery are on the rise in Afghanistan at the moment and the Afghan people are starting to leave the country and this trend will intensify in the days to come. Even a situation like the 70’s could arise in which more than 3 million refugees fled to Pakistan. But now Islamabad is not strong enough to bear this burden.
Our Foreign Ministry must refer to the United Nations and other global powers to convince them that Pakistan is not strong enough to comply with the 1951 Geneva Convention. Therefore, early camps should be set up on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border under the UN’s supervision and the refugees coming under the Geneva Convention should be resettled in other countries as well.
The agreement reached in Doha before the withdrawal of the United States and other world powers indicated that they would continue to support Afghanistan in the future. But over the past three months, despite repeated warnings from Pakistan and requests from the Taliban, Afghanistan’s frozen assets are not being restored and the situation is getting worse and worse.
The manner in which the United States has been dealing with Afghanistan since the withdrawal suggests that the US is taking issues toward the worst. And that’s why the World Food Organization, despite having the funds, is unable to help Afghanistan because of US sanctions. Similarly, the World Bank has apologized for helping Afghanistan at the behest of the United States.
According to reports from international organizations, starvation deaths have started in Afghanistan and the money collected at the request of the United Nations could not be sent to the Afghan government. Due to which the situation is getting worse and in such a situation questions arise whether the United States is deliberately paving the way for civil war by promoting hunger and misery in Afghanistan.
It seems that the US is using all the tactics behind the scenes to curb China’s influence in Afghanistan and to obstruct the CPEC. Meanwhile, India has spent a lot of money in Afghanistan and suffered a historic defeat after the formation of the Taliban government.
The meeting of the Troika Plus countries in Pakistan further highlighted the problems of Afghanistan and also called on the Foreign Minister of Afghanistan to meet the US, Russian and Chinese delegates which is an important step in paving the way for aid.
In Pakistan’s troubled economic situation, the changing conditions in Afghanistan and the region are getting heavier, which is causing the rupee to depreciate against the dollar and further inflation.
There is a need for Pakistan to cover the changing scenario of internal and external affairs and intensify its efforts to steer its policies in the right direction immediately. Otherwise, the situation can reach a level that is not only difficult to control, but it may also prove to be impossible.
