Real test for Afghan Taliban remains

Editorial by Editorial
August 20, 2021
Reading Time: 2 mins read

After taking over power in Afghanistan, the Taliban have signaled the establishment of a political government in the country and announced an acceptable leadership for the world through understanding.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that the world should learn to tolerate the Taliban and we did not attack anyone’s house. “We want diplomatic relations with all countries, but we will not tolerate any interference in our state and religious affairs. They do not give up in the face of oppression or any weapon,” he said.

Given the Taliban’s advance with the withdrawal of NATO forces, the United Nations feared that resistance from the Afghan people and forces could lead to a civil war in Afghanistan, but that their forces should surrender and the people should remain neutral. Afghanistan survived the carnage because of the Taliban, but the evacuation of several civilians after they took power has given the world the material to campaign against the Taliban.

As far as the Afghan Taliban is concerned, they have formally announced a general amnesty for their opponents and the world is still wondering how the Taliban came to power so quickly and peacefully? In this regard, it has been revealed that when the Taliban entered Kabul, they did not face any resistance from the Afghan government and forces.

Britain and Canada have announced they will not establish relations with the Taliban government, while other countries have adopted a wait-and-see policy. Earlier, the US froze the assets of the Afghan government and created problems for the Taliban and then the IMF also announced that its government could not be given anything from the financial resources of the International Monetary Fund.

Unlike in the past, Pakistan has taken a commendable step to remain neutral in the current situation and a balanced strategy will be necessary for the stability of Pakistan in the future as well. The Taliban leadership says the world should invest in Afghanistan while India has also been offered to complete ongoing projects, but it seems that the United Nations is not ready to trust the Taliban and has immediately stopped the aid worth millions of euros.

The Doha talks were not limited to the withdrawal of NATO forces but were held with the consent of the United Nations, which has given the Taliban political credentials because the Taliban did not recognize political power despite approval from a common platform of more than 190 countries.

The new Afghan leadership says running the country now is the Taliban’s real test, but comparing the past and the present, the difference is clear. The current Taliban leadership is more tolerant than in the past.

Learning from the past, the Taliban have made good use of politics at home and abroad this time around, while reducing reliance on military force has sent a positive message from Afghanistan to the international community. Religious harmony and amnesty for all enemies during Ashura Muharram are also commendable measures, but despite this, the United States and other influential countries say that the Taliban’s promises are not trusted, so seeing their promises are fully implemented and the United Nations Convincing the Taliban will be the real test.
