The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s highly-anticipated interview with Oprah Winfrey have been making rounds on social media since it has aired earlier this week.
Here is a round-up of what we learned from the couple’s recent interview:
1) Racist comments on Meghan Markle’s baby
Meghan Markle, the wife of Prince Harry, said there were concerns about how dark her son Archie’s skin would be before his birth.
2) Royal life made Meghan suicidal
Meghan, whose mother is Black and father is white, said she was naive before she married into the royal family in 2018, and ended up having suicidal thoughts and considered self-harm after asking for help but getting none.
3) Archie denied being given the prince title
“They didn’t want him to be a prince or princess, not knowing what the gender would be, which would be different from protocol and that he wasn’t going to receive security,” Meghan revealed in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.
4) Barred from securities protocol
Harry and Meghan said they pleaded with the royal family to pay for security for them and their son, but they were refused each time.
5) Kate ‘made Meghan cry’
One story that circulated in the newspapers a few years ago that the Duchess of Cambridge was left in tears by Meghan in the run-up to the wedding in a row over flower girl dresses.
However, Meghan told Oprah the reverse was true. “A few days before the wedding, Kate was upset about the flower girl but Kate later apologised and brought flowers and a note to make amends with Meghan.
6) Royal family cut the couple financially off
Most members of the royal family receive money each year from the family coffers in exchange for carrying out official engagements, however, such an act did not happen in Harry and Meghan case.
Then, when he and Meghan moved to the United States, Harry revealed that the royal family stopped giving them money. “My family literally cut me off financially,” Harry said.
7) Meghan did not do any research on the Royal Family
Meghan revealed she had been naive before her wedding and did not realise what she was marrying into when she joined the British royal family. “I will say I went into it naively because I did not grow up knowing much about the royal family,” Meghan said.
8) Expecting another child
The couple also revealed that their second child will be a girl. “Amazing, just grateful,” Harry said, describing his feelings. “To have any child, any one or any two, would have been amazing. But to have a boy and then a girl, what more could you ask for?” he said.
