Nawaz Sharif’s betrayal

Haleem Adil Shaikh by Haleem Adil Shaikh

The biggest criticism of Pakistan Army has been done by our arch-enemy India. Now Nawaz Sharif is doing what was the main job of the Indian state apparatus. Since the past 73 years, no politician has betrayed the nation like the former prime minister.

Not even Modi used the kind of derogatory language but Nawaz Sharif has directly targeted the army chief and hurled accusations at him. India rejoiced as he spewed venom against the government and the military and gave full coverage. After his controversial speech, there is no doubt that Nawaz Sharif has started pushing India’s narrative.

Nawaz Sharif is now India’s spokesman and is propagating their point of view but also coercing a faction of the PML-N to take the narrative forward.

We know there are people within the PML-N who oppose his anti-state narrative. They will soon come forward over fear of arrest or will distance themselves from any subversive activities. The PDM also seems concerned as the anti-military narrative will have much deeper repercussion, particularly those claiming that party cannot be sacrificed for the sake of an individual; the party is effectively split in two.

Meanwhile, Nawaz Sharif’s main aim to somehow create a rift between the government and the army. He should realise that he will not succeed in his nefarious design to end the mutual cooperation between state institutions, nor will anyone buy his narrative. There is no doubt the Nawaz Sharif’s narrative negates the state imposed doctrine.

Nawaz Sharif has decided to cross all limits just to protect himself from the accountability process. He is under the misimpression that the United States and India will support him in his diatribe against the army. He thinks the government will be compelled to withdraw all cases against him and he will be able to safeguard his ill-gotten plundered wealth stashed abroad.

Nawaz Sharif thinks that by issuing such threats against the army, he will be able to return to power and then protect himself. That’s why he has decided to have a no-holds-barred confrontation with the military and keep all his moral principles aside. Nawaz may be ready to face off against the army but should realise that he is going against the state and the people.

The army is also displeased with Nawaz Sharif’s provocative speeches and there is resentment. When General Musharaff toppled Nawaz’s government, he was conspiring against the army. The army has always acted in national interest and worked with Nawaz’s government, but he has always betrayed them.

Those who are supporting Nawaz’s narrative are the ones who violated the sanctity of Quaid-e-Azam’s mausoleum during their Karachi rally. They had the audacity to raise slogans near the founder’s grave. This was a new spectacle as no one dared cross the metal barrier, create a commotion inside and raise political slogans. The tomb is our national heritage and a part of our identity which has been publically desecrated. It is a place to pay your tributes and not sloganeering and there to laws against it.

This shows the political maturity of Maryam Nawaz, her husband Safdar and other PML-N leaders who created such a situation at a highly-revered location. By raising ‘Vote to izzat do’ (Respect the Vote) slogans, the respect of the Founder of the Nation was trampled. The PDM should ponder whether they are with the state or with the enemy.

All the parties in the PDM are there to protect their corruption while so-called defenders of Islam are among them. We are in a cold war with India over FATF and are on the grey list due to their corruption. We need to ask ourselves whether such an opposition deserves a gun salute or should the guns be turned against them.
