KARACHI: Chairman LPG Distributors Association of Pakistan Irfan Khokhar has warned of a severe gas crisis in Karachi in the coming days.
He said Sindh is facing a shortfall of 250 MMCFD gas which will further worsen in the coming days. He warned that the province will face a shortfall of 450 MMCFD in the upcoming winters which will continue for nearly four to five months.
He said the previous government did not make any efforts for oil and gas exploration which has worsened the situation and gas will become a scarce commodity in the upcoming days.
Khokar said there is a decline of seven percent in gas reserves in the country daily, and warned that even Punjab will face a gas crisis in the coming months. Sindh is currently facing a shortfall of 250 MMCFD and the differences between the provincial and federal government are worsening the crisis.
The circular debts of the gas sector is Rs250 billion and the annual losses of the two leading gas companies have surpassed Rs70 billion, while on the other hand 400 MMCFD gas has been taken out of the system.
He said the new gas discoveries are unlikely to make any significant difference and the nation will face a severe gas crisis in the coming days. He said the cooperation of the Sindh and the federal government was necessary to resolve the crisis.
