ISLAMABAD: The beggar mafia has increased in the federal capital and the police have failed to launch a crackdown against professional beggars and their handlers.
During the investigation from the beggars, it was found that the cops were patronising the beggars. They revealed that children and others also supply drugs in public transport as well as truck drivers in the guise of alm-seekers.
These handlers have been working in form of an organised gang and used to hire children mostly from shanty areas against the daily wages from Rs500 to Rs600 for begging in specific areas.
Some of the beggars are also involved in stealing valuables from the cars at traffic signals. Citizens of Islamabad have appealed to law enforcement agencies to take action against the police officials who are patronising the beggar mafia.
Earlier in September, federal police nabbed eight cops of the force involved in patronising beggars. IGP Islamabad Muhammad Aamir Zulfiqar directed SP (Investigation), Malik Naeem Iqbal, to take action against those patronizing beggars.
According to Pakistan law, begging can take you to jail for three years. Also, parents whose children are begging can be arrested and jailed for three years.
