LAHORE: Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore has sent a suspect, identified as Shafqat Ali, to jail on a 14-day judicial remand in the motorway gang-rape incident.
The suspected was arrested from Dibalpur a day prior and confessed to committing the crime alongside key suspect, Abid Ali. The district police brought Shafqat Ali to the court in an armoured vehicle and presented before the judge.
The IO officer presented the suspect’s record and sought his judicial remand for 14 days. ATC Judge Arshad Hussain Bhutta also approved a request by the prosecution to hold an identity parade of the suspect.
He told the court that the suspect’s DNA had matched with the samples collected from the crime scene. The ATC judge approved the plea and directed the police to make special arrangements for the suspect’s identity parade to be held as soon as possible.
The judge further directed the police to present the suspect before the court again on September 29. During the hearing, Judge Bhutta asked the suspect to say something. “Have mercy, please release me,” Shafqat responded.
Earlier on Monday, Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar had confirmed the arrest of one of the two suspects in the gang-rape case. He further informed that his DNA had matched, and he had confessed to the crime.
