LAHORE: Punjab police have started a crackdown against those spreading hate materials on social media and arrested more than 87 people under the charge.
According to police, this crackdown was launched as part of an effort to check sectarian posts on social media.
An official in Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) Lahore said the police have also apprehended 43 people under 3-Maintainance of Public Order (MPO) and shifted all of those arrested to the prison.
The official further said 4000 social media accounts have also been blocked over sharing the hate material, adding that 218 people have been put in the fourth schedule to monitor their activities.
It is worth mentioning here that law enforcement authorities had decided to take strict action against those sharing violence and other hate material on social media from time to time.
On July 19, Lahore police apprehended two men for posting their pictures with illegal weapons on social media.
Earlier on August 7, Punjab Minister for Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Social Welfare, Raja Basharat ordered to adopt a zero-tolerance policy on cybercrime and religious hate content on social media.
The minister further said that the government was grateful to all the religious leaders for their exemplary role and cooperation in promoting religious harmony in the country.
