CHILAS: At least five officials from the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), including a sub-inspector, were martyred after an exchange of fire during a police raid to detain wanted criminals in Chilas.
According to details, the incident took place today (Tuesday) a few kilometers from Chilas at Ronai village. Officials informed that two civilians were also killed during the shootout, while five other CTD officials sustained injuries.
Gilgit-Baltistan police spokesperson Mubarak Jan informed that the district police received information that wanted criminals, involved in several murders, were seeking shelter at a house.
“The district police immediately cordoned off the area after the incident took place, and carried out raids in adjoining areas,” he informed. The bodies of the martyred had been shifted to a nearby hospital.
The police spokesperson further said that the civilians killed during the exchange of fire were identified as Basharat and Izharullah. “We are investigating the incident from all angles,” he added.
The martyred officials were identified as Sub-Inspector Sohrab Khan, Zia, Junaid Karim, Ghulam Murtaza, and Ishtiaq Ahmed. Inspector Nabi Wali Khan was among the five that were injured.
Meanwhile, the family members of the civilians have staged a protest on the Karakoram Highway with the body of the deceased. Family members of the deceased have said that Izharullah, one of the person killed in the raid, was a student.
In this regard, GB’s caretaker Chief Minister has said that the terrorists were involved in an arms and ammunition business. He had also sought a report of the incident from IG Dr. Mujeebur Rehman.
