TEHRAN (AFP): Iran was struck by another accident on its infrastructure after an explosion hit a power plant in the central Iranian province of Isfahan, a state news agency reported.
According to the state news agency, the officials have blamed faulty equipment for the accident. The incident has not caused any casualties.
The managing director of Isfahan’s electricity company said, “A worn-out transformer at Isfahan’s Islamabad thermal power plant exploded at around 5:00 am today.”
“The facility returned to normal working conditions after about two hours and Isfahan’s power supply was uninterrupted,” the managing director added.
He further said, “The damaged equipment is also being repaired and replaced,” adding that the facility supplied electricity to the city of Isfahan.
The incident is the latest in a string of fires and explosions at military and civilian sites across Iran in recent weeks. Two explosions rocked Tehran in late June, one near a military site and the other in a health centre, the latter killing 19 people.
Earlier in July, Fires or blasts also hit the Natanz nuclear complex in central Iran and a shipyard in southern Iran. Officials had called the Natanz fire an accident without elaborating.
The string of fires and explosions has prompted speculation in Iran that they may be the result of sabotage by arch-enemy Israel.
