KARACHI: The Sindh government has allowed petrol pumps to remain open round the clock to facilitate masses.
In a statement, Sindh Information Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah said the decision was taken to facilitate masses during ongoing monsoon rains. He said that a notification regarding the new order will be issued by the Home Department.
Earlier petrol pumps across the province had been allowed to open from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The decision was taken after the demand for petrol increased for generators and vehicles as electricity supply was disconnected in major areas of the city.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted more rain in the megapolis in the upcoming 24 hours after monsoon showers battered the city on Friday afternoon.
The maximum temperature in Karachi remained between 37 to 39 degrees centigrade in the port city today. Karachi is witnessing the north-southern winds at 18km/hour speed.
On Friday, the dwellers of Karachi witnessed immense hardships when a brief but heavy spell of rain submerged many thoroughfares and low-lying areas, causing traffic jams and depriving vast city areas of power while strong winds uprooted trees, poles and electrocuted two people, including an on-duty policeman.
Almost half of Karachi’s roads and localities were flooded with sewage-mixed rainwater, as many of the low-lying areas were reduced to pools of water as choked stormwater drains overflowed after rainfall.
