KARACHI: Residents and shopkeepers in Karachi’s Old City area have refused to evacuate damaged buildings despite the efforts of the concerned authorities.
According to details, Sindh Government’s Archaeological Department had issued an order to evacuate the Thakur Lal G. Laxman Das building at Dawood Pota Road.
Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and Police officials arrived at the spot and directed the shopkeepers to evacuate the building. However, shopkeepers refused to evacuate it and staged a protest against the authorities.
In this regard, the assistant commissioner, and the police officials of the area refused to provide security to the SBCA staff. Despite the building being declared ‘dangerous’, the owner is constantly carrying out construction work. ‘
Pakistan Metrological Department has also forecast heavy rainfall in the metropolis from tomorrow. PMD officials informed that the fresh monsoon system will enter Karachi by tonight and moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in the city tonight or Friday morning.
Earlier on June 30, soon after the beginning of the monsoon spell, SBCA issued eviction notices to the residents of over 354 unsafe buildings across the city, informing them of the danger of living in those decaying structures during the rain. Of these, around 250 are in the old city area alone.
However, not a single resident was ready to leave the buildings, despite being apprised of its hazardousness in detail.
