KARACHI: Administration of a cement factory in Karachi’s Malir district has laid off hundreds of workers in the name of the financial crisis due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
According to details, the decision was taken in an emergency meeting with the employees. During the meeting, it was decided that the management could not pay their salaries due to the economic crisis.
However, the administration assured that it would call the workers again if conditions improved. The administration has also issued a notification in this regard.
A large number of workers also staged a protest outside the factory against the dismissal of hundreds of workers from jobs and denial of their wages during the lockdown.
It has been observed some factories were downsizing their workforce to keep up with the overall operations, while others were implementing across the board pay cuts to avoid layoffs.
Earlier in April, prominent software houses and tech companies had decreased the size of their workforce as well as reduced the salaries of their existing staff due to the economic crisis amid lockdown to contain COVID-19.
