KABUL: At least seven police officers were killed when their checkpoint was attacked in central Afghanistan, blaming the Taliban for the attack.
According to a statement issued by district police chief Fakhruddin, the attack happened late on Friday in Pasaband district of Ghor province. In the attack, seven police officers were killed and one another injured.
“One policeman is missing, adding that the suspected Taliban attackers had seized guns and ammunition”. The attack was confirmed by the deputy governor of Ghor, Habibullah Radmanish, who also blamed the rebellious group.
The statement further said no one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, which came hours after four people were killed in a blast at a mosque in Kabul during Friday prayers.
The attack comes a week after an attack killed two people, including a popular prayer leader, at a mosque on the edge of Kabul’s heavily fortified green zone.
Afghanistan is juggling multiple crises, with the coronavirus rapidly spreading across the country and continuing violence even as the government and Taliban signal they are getting closer to sitting down for talks.
A ceasefire during last month’s Eid al Fitr holidays also sparked hopes that the two sides may be getting closer to holding negotiations even as a recent uptick in fighting has tempered expectations.
