Recently, I heard the news regarding the deaths of four Pakistani doctors from the novel coronavirus. One of them was a female who was in her 20s. According to data from the health ministry, almost 17 medical professionals have died of Covid-19 in Pakistan out of a total 1,904 who tested positive; this figure included 299 nurses, 570 other healthcare staff, and 1,035 doctors. Medical staff and paramedics are at the frontline in the war against coronavirus and are the most at risk as well.
The WHO had already warned that coronavirus may never go away. The global health agency and experts around the world are unable to predict when the virus will disappear and life will return to normal. Instead of acting responsibly, we are violating the SOPs through which we not only affecting ourselves and others, we are also creating difficulties for the frontline doctors who are trying to contain the outbreak of the deadly virus.
We have to keep in mind that we live in a country, which health system isn’t strong. We lacked the necessary safety precautions, response time, health care systems, and advanced research to save ourselves. We should be more concerned about the health and safety of our doctors and medical staff. They should have the necessary safety equipment and take all precautions as well.
The World health body had also issued a stern warning that the number of COVID-19 cases in Pakistan could reach 200,000 by mid-July if ‘timely intervention’ were not taken. Yet, we seem not to take the advice of either the government or the health experts and continue with our activities.
The only thing the doctors and the government suggested was ‘Social Distancing’. This has worked in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the virus originated. But in societies like ours where there is a lack of public awareness, civic sense, and consciousness, even simple precautions are not being followed.
It’s time we should be considerate about the health of the frontline doctors and the medical staff and stay at home to defeat the pandemic as they have stepped out for us.
