CHINIOT: A girl, named Shazia Bibi, was allegedly killed by her father and relative for having a freewill marriage, according to the police.
According to the details, the father and the relative dumped the body of the girl in a ditch near River Chenab. The girl’s father, Muhammad Ali, and his relative killed Shazia Bibi in their own house and spread misinformation that his daughter had gone missing from home.
The victim performed marriage of her choice two months ago following which her father Abdul Raheem developed a grudge against her. Police have registered a case against the accused father and the relative for their roles in the murder.
During the interrogation, the girl’s father Muhammad Ali and the relative admitted their guilt and said that Shazia had got married to her own choice so they killed her.
After the investigation, Chenab Nagar police recovered the body and shifted it to the hospital for postmortem.
Human rights campaigners claimed that more than 1,500 killings occurred between 2016 and 2018, a figure anecdotally confirmed by Asad Butt, vice-chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.
Every week in Pakistan brings fresh news of “honour” killings. Pakistan’s parliament passed legislation against killings linked to the concept of honour, following the murder of Qandeel Baloch in 2016. The bill authorised life imprisonment for convicted murderers.
