Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has asserted that India’s current situation is very grim and morose.
In a sharply critical op-ed published in The Hindu, Manmohan Singh warned of “social disharmony, economic slowdown and a global health epidemic” facing the country.
Referring to the deadly communal violence in New Delhi Manmohan Singh said, “With no checks, the fire of social tensions is rapidly spreading across the nation and threatens to char the soul of our nation. It can only be extinguished by the same people that lit it.”
He further wrote, “India that we know and cherish is slipping away fast. It is time to confront the harsh reality of the grave risks we face as a nation and address them squarely and sufficiently.”
Commenting on the threat of coronavirus in India, He said that India needs a “full-scale operation” to deal with the health crisis. He warned that an outbreak would have a significant impact on Indian business.
Mr. Singh advised the current Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to convince the nation not just through his words, but also through his actions.
He wrote, “Every act of sectarian violence is a blemish on Mahatma Gandhi’s India,” wrote Singh.
The article comes in the wake of the most violent riots to take place in capital, Delhi, in decades that killed more than 50 Indians.
