Erdogan’s support on Kashmir

Editorial by Editorial
February 16, 2020
Reading Time: 2 mins read
Turkish President Recept Tayyib Erdogan was in Pakistan on a two-day official visit where he held several important engagements to transform relations into an economic partnership. The highlight of the visit was his address to parliament during which he reaffirmed his unequivocal support on the Kashmir dispute.
The Turkish President compared the Kashmiris’ struggle with the Battle of Gallipolli, the historic battle during World War I, saying that what happened in Turkey over a hundred years ago was being repeated in Indian-occupied Kashmir. Erdogan was referring to the battle in Canakkale when the invading forces suffered a massive defeat and is considered a great victory for the Ottoman Empire. The battle paved the way for the declaration of independence for Turkey.
Erdogan reiterated Turkey’s support for Kashmiris and said that the Kashmir issue has the same importance to him as the people of Pakistan. He said the Kashmir dispute cannot be resolved by conflict but on the basis of justice and Turkey will continue to raise its voice against the oppression. The Kashmir issue was mentioned several times in his speech saying that Kashmiris have suffered for decades and their situation has worsened in recent times, referring to the unilateral steps taken by India.
Pakistan has expedited efforts to raise the Kashmir issue ever since India annexed the territory in August last year and imposed a debilitating communication blockade that has been enforced ever since. The support has been scant with just a handful of countries showing explicit support notably Turkey and Malaysia. Pakistan has found a friend in Turkey who supports its narrative on the Kashmir issue.
India has taken exception to Erdogan’s comments on Kashmir during his address to Pakistan’s parliament. It has warned the Turkish leadership not be interfere in India’s internal affairs and develop a proper understanding of the facts. Erdogan is unlikely to be swayed by India’s threat as he holds considerable strength and has emerged as a global leader. India also threatened Malaysia after its support on Kashmir by imposing a boycott of palm oil which affected its economy.
Erdogan’s stance on the Kashmir issue has made him immensely popular in Pakistan. Prime Minister Imran Khan said Erdogan has such overwhelming support here that he could easily win elections here. A Gallup survey has listed Erdogan as the most popular Muslim leader in the world. He has called Pakistan his second home and relations between both countries are strong than ever before.
