ISLAMABAD: Anwar Mansoor, Attorney General for Pakistan has departed to Washington to puruse a review of the International court concerning Reko Dek mining contract.
Attorney General for Pakistan has departed to Washington to pursue the review of the decision of the International Centre of Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) imposing a $5.9 billion penalty on Pakistan in the case of dismissal of Reko Diq mining contract.
The AG had hurried back from the US to Islamabad to join last Thursday’s pending case concerning the Gas Development Infrastructure Cess, which was brought before the Supreme Court, led by Justice Mushir Alam, at the application of the Government.
However, when the case was taken up, the AG notified the bench that it would be traveling back to the United States on Friday to take part in some important legal matters.
Afterward, he told a group of journalists that he was leaving for Washington to plan and lodge a revision appeal in the Reko Diq award.
On July 12, 2019, the World Bank Court called ICSID for a massive $5.97 billion award against Pakistan, including $4.08 billion as a fine and $1.87 billion in interest, in its 700-page ruling.
The ICSID was seized by a conflict between Pakistan and Tethyan Copper Company Pvt Limited (TCC) which demanded $8.5 billion for the refusal of the Balochistan Mining Authority’s request for a multimillion dollar contract in 2011.
Reko Diq, which implies ‘ sandy peak ‘ in the Balochian language, is also the name of an old volcano and is renowned for its vastgold and copper deposits and is thought to be the world’s fifth biggest gold mine.
