Prime Minister Imran Khan is nowadays in a tight pickle over his recent remarks while trying to explain the rising rape cases in Pakistan. During a public telethon, Imran Khan was asked about what steps ruling PTI has taken to prevent sexual abuse. However, Prime Minister’s response to the caller was unsettling.
Though PM Khan denounced crimes against women and children, he linked rape to ‘vulgarity’, which he described as a Western and an Indian import. His remark not only brought criticism from women’s rights groups, civil society and but also from international media and organisations.
The Prime Minister also implied that rape cases can somehow be prevented if women observe purdah. In his words, purdah would lessen the temptation of those who lack willpower. Rape is a result of power imbalance not temptation. Rapists control their urges when they have a fear of social and judicial retribution, accountability and conviction.
The premier’s point appeared to be more about limiting government responsibility than reforming male behaviour. This misstatement reflects the lack of good messaging from the government. The Prime Minister could have used the opportunity to bring light to the positive steps the government has taken, with regards to legislation, to stop rape crimes. His statement also reflects an unhelpful approach to curbing rape crimes.
On the other hand, PM Imran critics are openly castigating him for such comments. Already, a vast majority of the country treats victims of these crimes as criminals; placing the responsibility of the assault on them. It would have been wise if PM Imran could have worded his stance better.
Gender discrimination and sexual abuse are unfortunately a reality in our society, and victim-blaming can only worsen the situation. It is hoped that the Prime Minister will take into account the thoughtful criticisms and make a clarification of his statement.
