Nadeem Babar’s controversy

Muhammad Tariq Khan by Muhammad Tariq Khan
March 28, 2021
Reading Time: 2 mins read

In January 2021, Pakistan generated 1,020 GWh of electricity from furnace oil and diesel, while 960 GWh from LNG. Power generation from LNG costs Rs8 per unit, while furnace oil costs Rs14 and diesel Rs19. At that time Pakistan not only had the cheapest LNG but also abundant. So the question is who decided to generate electricity from furnace oil and diesel instead of LNG? Who benefited from this decision? And rest assured, this will be a mega scandal in the history of Pakistan.

It is worth mentioning here that two and a half years have been passed since Imran Khan was sworn as the Prime Minister of Pakistan with Nadeem Babar as his Special Assistant for Petroleum and Energy, who owns a well known and large petroleum company in Pakistan.

This is the same Nadeem Babar whose investigation into his company’s involvement in the 2019-2020 petroleum crisis, which began a year ago, was not only completed, but the report was also submitted to the prime minister. And according to the government’s own investigation report, Nadeem Babar’s company was involved in the petroleum crisis and the company benefited billions of rupees.

If the petrol crisis of 2019-2020 has faded away from your memory then I would like to remind you that the petrol prices had crashed globally. But thanks to the generosity of Prime Minister Imran Khan and his special assistant, petrol prices in Pakistan were at an all-time high.

The PTI government came under severe criticism in this regard. Later the government announced a huge reduction in the prices of petroleum products, but soon after the announcement, the owners closed their petrol pumps. Petrol was in short supply. As the crisis intensified, petrol started selling at double the government rate.

When people started protests, the government announced an investigation and later it was found that several companies, including Nadeem Babar’s were responsible for creating an artificial crisis and collecting billions of rupees. In the same days, there were reports in the media that Nadeem Babar had concealed his assets and was the owner or shareholder of many companies.

And then the question arises as to who and why Nadeem Babar was retained as Special Assistant despite the fact that his company was involved in Petroleum Scandal 2019-2020? And if it happened with the will of Prime Minister Imran Khan, then an investigation should be launched against the premier as well.

And if Imran Khan is not involved in the scandal, it all happened at the behest of someone else, and then the question is who else is he? Who is the one whose decisions are endorsed by the Prime Minister himself, whether willingly or unwillingly? What is the power behind the Prime Minister’s decision to make the most corrupt people in Pakistan part of his cabinet?
