Our way of governance

Shahid Shahnawaz by Shahid Shahnawaz

Reading Time: 2 mins read

The history of our homeland bears witness to the fact that no problem including political and economic crisis has ever been completely resolved. The government democratically elected by the people were overthrown by military dictators and the sacrifices of the army were wasted by the politicians at the negotiating table.

Pakistan’s economic and social problems began with the passing of Quaid-e-Azam in 1948. Speaking of the 60’s, who could have been more deserving to be in power than Fatima Jinnah? But who won? If we go back to the 70’s, we witnessed the great tragedy of the Fall of Dhaka where East Pakistan separated from us. We lost the title of the largest Muslim state in the world and eventually it was not until the 90’s that we became a nuclear power and regained our standing.

We don’t need to go far when it comes to the judiciary. I will not comment whether was it was right to sentence former Army Chief General Musharraf to death. But is there any justification for remarks like hanging Musharraf’s body at the crossroads. The decision certainly brought tears to every patriotic citizen that if the former army chief is sentenced to death then the soldier standing on the border ready to sacrifice his life will be demotivated. The case of General Bajwa’s extension was so hyped that there is no precedent even in India and South Asia.

Politicians have made huge mistakes as a result of which the country is suffering from sectarian, religious and ethnic conflicts.

The way our Afghan policy suddenly changed during Musharraf’s tenure in favour of the United States brought a plethora of problems and terrorism which we are still fighting till date. Religious and political parties, as well as nationalist ones, have fueled sectarianism and ethnic hatred.

Speaking of national institutions, from PTA and PEMRA to National Accountability Bureau (NAB), which institution in the country is doing its job properly? Cases are lodged against politicians and they are arrested but still manage to go abroad while the government can do nothing. In which province have we established law and order? Crime has become commonplace and people’s dignity and lives are unsafe. Journalism is considered the fourth pillar of the state. But yellow journalism, blackmailing, intimidating the public by exaggerating crimes, and sensationalism to stifle public opinion has become an established tradition in the media.

Yes indeed, we are living in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan where nothing works, cannot be done and is not allowed to happen. All the problems including inflation, nepotism, bribery and corruption can be solved if the national institutions are fixed. Reforming the police and judiciary is imperative to control crime. We also need a robust accountability system to control political crises. Every problem can be solved if the ruling political party focuses only on justice.
